Friday after work we dropped off Knuckles, picked up T at school and then were off. After a stop at Mike & Ryan’s in East Lansing the eight of us (Mike, Ryan, Bella, Lucy, Kris, T, Mugsy and I) were off to gorgeous Onekama, Michigan. Onekama is a small town that serves as the gateway to M-22 (one of the most scenic drives in Northern Michigan) and site of Mike & Ryan’s cottage on the lake.
We stopped for dinner in Clare and then got up to the cabin around nine where we had a blast the first night playing Zero, or hipster family feud as we like to call it.
Yesterday morning Ryan cooked a delicious breakfast and then we took a beautiful drive. Despite gray skies and wind, the scenery was still beautiful. We stopped to show T some gorgeous views. First at Arcadia Bluffs
After these two stops we continued up 22 to Leland. This was a new town for Kris and I, who haven’t spent a ton of time up North. We parked and visited Verterra’s tasting room for some delicious wine (I had never tasted a Michigan wine I liked before yesterday) and apple pie cider.
After that we walked over to Fishtown, a historic section of Leland that was reminiscent of Maine or Massachusetts. The dockside shanties hold a variety of shops including the famous Cheese Shanty (amazing sandwiches; split one!) and a fun spot for candy and ice cream. There’s also awesome views of old fishing boats and insane leaping fish. Definitely a fun stop.
The weather was less than stellar but it was still an amazing and fun weekend. We had to come back fairly early today (Nancy had to attend a funeral in the later afternoon) but it was the perfect weekend getaway.
